EKOTEKO project

Open project database

EKOTEKO – Ecological compensations from theory to practice was a joint research project by University of Helsinki, the Finnish Environment Institute (SYKE) and Akordi. The project aim was to find a practical way to implement ecological compensations by combining science, dialogue and experimentation. Akordi facilitated a workshop in 2019 that brought together parties interested in piloting ecological compensations. This meant landowners, companies, and relevant authorities.

The workshop was a joint effort by EKOTEKO and InnoForEst projects. It included initial discussions between landowners and companies regarding the criteria and expectations they would have for testing ecological compensations.

Ecological compensations are emerging as potential natural protection instruments thanks to research and international experiences and experimentations. EKOTEKO project aimed at nurturing a culture of collaboration regarding compensations, in which different parties feel that they consider and solve the challenges of implementing ecological compensations together.
