Regional Flood Risk Management Groups

Open project database

Regional flood risk management groups, established by the Finnish Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, work to minimize flood damages in Finnish riverine and coastal areas identified as flood risk areas. This collaborative work involves public authorities, the private sector, land owners , water rights holders, and third sector organizations. Akordi supported this work in 2019 by training leaders of flood risk management groups in Kymijoki river and the coastlines of Kotka and Hamina. The work also included facilitating workshops.

The workshops support the wider flood risk management process. Its aim is to produce management plans that cover all significant flood risk areas in Finland. The management plans will define objectives and measures for flood risk management. Since the participation of private and third sector entities is mostly voluntary for them, securing public, private and third sector collaboration in flood risk management is very important. This ensures the successful implementation of the planned measures.

Akordi’s role in the flood risk management group’s work was to provide expertise in participatory collaboration. Akordi’s methods are based on strengthening understanding between the stakeholders and finding the best ways to implement necessary actions.  During spring 2019, Akordi coached leaders of the flood groups in leading and strengthening stakeholder cooperation and in conflict resolution and management.
